  4. I did like the story. Prose is much easier to read than a play, but since the Augsburg Chalk Circle was almost all written in narrative form one quickly gets the feeling that Brecht is outlining a larger work. I find all of the historical references also very thought provoking. There are more parallels between Augsburg and Caucasian than just the baby. zB they both are set during wars that almost totally destroyed Germany.

I also found the reading of scene one to be very good. That helped to bring the people of the class together so they will feel more at ease about speaking-up in class.

In our class discussion today, I had confused the Caucasian mountains with the Carpathian (Karpaten) mountains, which are partially located in Silesia. Gerta must have thought the same thing. My face is red.

  7. Today in class after an excellent report by Anneliese on Germany History 1918-1933 there was a short discussion of chapter 2 of “The Caucasian Chalk Circle.”
The main point of the discussion seemed to be that the action depicted in the play could take place almost anywhere and anytime in history. It was a time of war and social unrest. It was a time of upheaval and fighting in the streets. When I got after class, the first image that popped up on my computer showed today’s unrest in Egypt:

(For some reason, the photo did not appear in the blog.)

This could be right out of Scene 2. All they need is some pretty music.
So check it out! Here is some music:
